Being part of the Steel Bridge Team offers a valuable learning experience that can benefit members in both their academic and professional careers.

Members gain hands-on experience in designing steel structures, applying principles of statics, mechanics, and materials science. Team members learn practical skills in fabrication techniques, welding, and construction methods. Members develop project management skills, including planning, budgeting, and coordinating team efforts. All members also can go to regionals each spring and compete in the Steel Bridge Competition.

Participating in the competition provides opportunities to network with other engineering members and professionals in the industry. Kansas State University’s Amateur Radio Club (W0QQQ), in continuous operation since 1927, promotes interest in amateur radio by supporting curriculum through workshops and licensing opportunities, encouraging participation in regional and worldwide operating events, and by providing service to both K-State and the surrounding community in coordination with the university’s emergency management plan. Membership includes students, faculty, staff, and community partners.

For those new to amateur radio, the organization provides opportunities to design, build, and operate equipment, participate in regional and worldwide events, practice emergency preparedness, and collaborate on projects. Participation in this competition provides a realistic simulation of a two-step best value selections process which includes responding to a Request for Qualification followed by a Request for Proposal. The response is based on a real-world design-build problem project which requires the students to engage in the planning and execution of a design solution. This process tests skills like leadership, communication, problem solving and supports overall career development.

The mission of the Concrete Canoe Team is to construct a concrete canoe annually and compete with it at the regional competition hosted by the University of Kansas in Lawrence this year. Success in competition is dependent on the concrete mix design, the canoe hull design, the canoe's performance in the water, and the team's technical report and presentation on the canoe.

Members of this team develop and hone teamwork, technical communication, leadership, and design skills. Members learn how concrete works and get to design specialty concrete. Members will experience the design process used in real-world construction and manufacturing. Members will form friendships with other students that can last a lifetime!
