Advisors' Circle Re-cap - October 2022

Advisors' Circle provides opportunities for student organization advisors to network with one another, discuss current trends and topics, and receive updates and announcements from the Center for Student Involvement.

Below is a summary of notes and announcements from the October 2022 Advisors' Circle meeting: 
  • Discussion
    • New Student Organization Policy
      • Should be in place in time for registration in April, be on the lookout for more information to be announced in the coming months
    • Impacts of Covid on organization particpation
      • Do hybrid or online events help? 
      • Impressed with the dedication of students, seems like they feel a need to be together in-person with each other
      • Now is the time of year when they are getting stressed and needing to choose on where they spend their time and energy
      • Pool of candidates for officer applications is getting smaller and smaller since the beginning of Covid
      • Since Covid restrictions are lifted, they have so many options of what to do, they are still figuring out how to manage their options 
    • Advisor Support Resources
      • CSI is looking into creating a communications channel for organization advisors in OrgCentral so that you can continue to connect and communicate outside of our monthly meetings. More infromation to come. 
    • OrgCentral Settings: Members
      • By default, people who register for a group need to be validated manually by group officers to be considered as a member.

        • How to prevent people from joining your group
          • Dashboard > Settings > Basics > Basic Settings > Close Membership - select Yes

    • Cat Trax for student organizations
      • Cat Trax is a new engagement program that gives students points and prizes for getting involved in student organizations. Learn more about how your organization can leverage this program for recruitment and marketing. 
  • Student Well-being Support - We're just past the mid-point of the semester. Students may be feeling overwhelmed. If you are concerned about any of your students well-being, please consider some of the following resources:
    • My Student Support Program mobile app - students will receive:
      • 24/7 real-time, confidential mental health support services for everything from an immediate crisis to everyday concerns, via phone and online/app chat.
      • Counseling from trained, master's-level, multilingual clinicians. Counselors who speak Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, French and English are available 24/7. Other languages by appointment, depending on availability.
      • On-demand support — whenever, wherever — as many times as they need it, with no appointment necessary.
      • Free access to LIFT, a fitness app.
    • Student of Concern reporting - https://www.k-state.edu/report/
      • Any referrals made will be responded to during business hours by the Office of Student Life
      • If you need to speak to the Manhattan campus Dean on Call after hours, please call (785) 532-6432 for consultation
      • If you have an on-campus emergency that requires immediate action, please call 911.
      • You may also contact the K-State Manhattan campus police at (785) 532-6412
  • Announcements
    • Kelli's Last Day 
      • The Center for Student Involvement Executive Director, Kelli Farris, has accepted a new role and will be leaving Kansas State University. Her last day was October 21. 
    • Annual Student Org Awards nominations will open in November and close in early Spring semester

      • Student Leader of the Year
      • Event of the Year
      • Student Organization of the Year
    • Next Student Leader Network meeting is Tuesday, November 29 (after Fall Break)
      • Guest speaker: Chris Bowman, Director of K-State's Morrison Family Center for Student Well-Being, will lead a a discussion on mental self-care going into finals.
    • Next Advisors' Circle meeting is Thursday, December 1
